Banana Republic Catalog Cover Gallery

The catalogs are filled with great imagery and writing, but there’s no doubt that the covers are the real stars. They have such variety and interest, with striking colors, superb illustration and whimsical compositions. It was always a delight to find one waiting in the mailbox.

Here we get a rare look at the earliest catalogs dating back to 1979! The catalog was duo-tone, two colors, for the first few years. The arrival of more expensive color printing in 1984 seems to coincide with the infusion of money when BR was sold to The GAP. Many of these early catalogs are not numbered, so they are put in order of season (Fall, Winter etc) and I use the additions of new store addresses to date them. Coming after catalog #8, for instance, is a notice about the opening of the Polk Street store in San Francisco. There are more catalogs than the numbering allows, so some must be considered updates.

At the end we have the 5 bookstore catalogs.

Enjoy, and then head over the the catalog store to pick up some for yourself!
